Jeremy Fish at Fecal Face Tonight

Artist: Jeremy Fish
Title: The Ambush
Gallery: Fecal Face
Opening Reception: Thursday, February, 26, 2009 from 6-9 p.m.
Address: 66 Gough St.
After party: The Uptown, 200 Capp St (10-2am)

"There once was a gladiator, who once was a hero and became a real tyrant; drunk on greed and power," Says Fish, "His path of destruction became so vast that eventually his prey began to organize an uprising. It is this sense of strength in numbers to avenge an evil dictator that becomes the central theme of the show." Using a system of cut and painted wood panels integrated with, and extending from the mural, The Ambush serves a visual reminder of the consequences of unconditional power, and the strength that all us "little people" have to organize a beatdown of grand proportions. The moral lesson being that as power and ego begin to run your life, never forget the little people who got you to where you are. If you do, they just may get organized, plan an ambush, and hand you your ass.

Monster Drawing Rally

February 27, 2009 6:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Southern Exposure’s
9th Annual
Monster Drawing Rally

Friday, February 27, 2009
6:00 – 11:00 PM
Donation: $5 & UP
Event Location: Verdi Club
2424 Mariposa Street (between Hampshire and Potrero Streets)

Southern Exposure announces the 9th Annual Monster Drawing Rally at the Verdi Club, a live drawing and fundraising event featuring over 130 artists.

Providing the basic necessities of the drawing practice--pencils, charcoal, pens, markers, ink, and paper--Southern Exposure creates the context while the artists create the content of the drawings. The evening will consist of four one-hour shifts with approximately 30 artists drawing simultaneously each hour. As the drawings are completed they will be hung on the walls and available for purchase for $60 each. The Monster Drawing Rally promises to be an action-packed spectacle you won't want to miss!

The Monster Drawing Rally provides a unique opportunity to watch a drawing come to life, and to purchase a work of art minutes after it's completion. Proceeds from the event provide direct support for Southern Exposure's Exhibitions and Artists in Education Programs.

The evening will also provide a sneak peek of Southern Exposure's new home! Southern Exposure is moving to a new 4,000 square foot space on 20th Street in the Mission District in late spring of 2009. Plans, drawings, information and ways to get involved will all be available at the event.

Music will be delivered all night long by Bo Derelict.
Curbside tacos sold by El Tonayense.

Generous in-kind donations for the 9th Annual Monster Drawing Rally are provided by Trumer Brauerei Berkeley, Bridgeport Brewery, and Nectar Ales.

Natalia Fabia's “Hooker DreamEscape”

Artist: Natalia Fabia
Gallery: Corey Helford Gallery
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 7 to 10pm
Exhibition Dates: February 21 until March 14, 2009
Address: 8522 Washington Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90232

"Providing tongue-in-cheek “dream-escapes” with jewel-toned forests and candy-colored landscapes, the artist creates the ideal environment for her bold seductresses to indulge themselves in life’s little pleasures. As one siren is discovered capriciously binging on pizza in a child’s room, another quietly relaxes alone in a pool at midnight, enjoying a cigarette. Fabia’s unique style evolves for “Hooker DreamEscape”, capturing a more heightened realism in this collection of oil-on-panel works, topped off, as always, by the artist’s signature glitter veneer. The exhibition will also feature a limited edition of fifteen Lucite chandeliers, each baroque design elegantly displaying custom charms and hand-signed and numbered by the artist."

Natalia recently contributed a portrait of Pink to the "Worlds on Fire" exhibit, curated by Justin Giarla and Kris Lewis for the Grammys.

Museum of Broken Relationships

Gallery: Root Division
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 14th, 7 - 10 pm
Exhibition Dates: February 14-28, 2009
Address: 3175 17th Street (at S. Van Ness)

All of us have experienced the end of a loving relationship, whether with a lover, friend, or family member. Most of us have hidden away the objects that remind us of these painful heartbreaks. Have you ever wished there was a meaningful way of letting go of these 'things?' Have you ever wanted to preserve beautiful moments from your past? The Museum is an artistic project in which everyone can participate. It is a grand effort to honor the emotional heritage of humankind, offering the possibility to use the positive forces of creation and memory (instead of destruction and oblivion) in overcoming your broken heart.

Conceived of and created by Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubiši? of Croatia, the Museum is on a world tour. The artists strongly believe in the arts as a path to emotional catharsis, and that by interacting with the intimate stories of others our cultural and political differences dissolve into a shared common experience.

"I See It All" by Deth P Sun

Deth P. Sun’s new book, I See It All, showcases his vast drawing ability and creativity by reproducing 64 pages from his original sketchbook created in March of 2008. Sun’s work depicts the hero’s mythology using anthropomorphic animals with symbolic objects within epic settings.

Deth draws from a number of influences inside his sketchbooks, from historical references to the objects lying about his home. From this he has evolved an architecture of animals, skulls, weapons, plants, buildings, ships, fires, foods and grand expressions rendered in intricate fonts.

Anthony Lister at Upper Playground

Artist: Anthony Lister
Gallery: Upper Playground FIFTY24SF
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 5, 2009 from 7-9p.m.
Exhibition Dates: February 5 – 26, 2009
Address: 252 Fillmore St

“Magic Trick” is a solo exhibition by Anthony Lister, a painter and installation artist born in Australia, and based in New York City.

Anthony Lister’s creations are described as brilliant, broken and abstracted figural works depicting the darker side of both heroes and villains. His fractured renderings place them as imperfect and exaggerated, post-post-modern opposites to how they were conceived – as symbols of modernist humanism. Lister’s work is a reflection and interpretation of the constant bombardment of media, and its relationship with the viewer. His mixed media technique of utilizing various types of paint, from spray paint to watercolor to acrylics, gives his work a depth that has made him one of the most sought-after contemporary artists today.
