Brian Willmont

Brian's paintings are of a growing genre, that I know not the name of. They're representations of what's actually happening in our controlled environments that we often ignore or miss. It's the layer we all feel but can't see with our eyes. These are all from his Maden series.

Last Nights Mish Mash

Lauren and I went to hear Ron English speak on the Andy Warhol panel at Minna. I was surprised he was the only person on the panel who actually knew Andy. When Ron wasn't speaking I kinda felt like I was back in college listening to a professor. When walking out I caught this poster of our former president.

We then made our way to David Cunningham Projects for a conceptual exhibit that one would expect to find in NYC.

Apart from the video, painting, and sound pieces, the large tanks in the middle room were most captivating. Elevated on pillars about 6 ft and 6 1/2 feet tall, containing model mountain ranges submerged in water, they blur the lines between science experiment and art piece. After the artist filled the tanks with water, she poured a substance in that settled at the bottom and will slowly rise to the top with visible horizontal layers.

We then moved onto Root Division to see what Kevin's been working on and check out the exhibit Whitney Lynn curated. Here's a bit about it from Whitney.

"An exhibition of 30 artists exploring notions of vacated information. Highlighting the content of absence, these artists work with themes of censorship, value, memory and loss. Using techniques of erasure, displacement, cancellation and extraction, the act of taking out information often gives new meaning to what is left. Simplifying or abandoning material can highlight essential content, provide codification, or stand as a subversive gesture."

David Cunningham Projects Opening Reception Tonight

TRYING TO COPE WITH THINGS THAT AREN’T HUMAN (PART ONE)
This is the first in a series of exhibitions, which will tour to AirSpace Gallery in the UK in March and continue to develop as it moves on from there.

Gallery: David Cunningham Projects
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 22, 2008 from 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: January 22, 2009 - February 28, 2009
Address: 1928 Folsom Street, San Francisco, CA

"Trying To Cope With Things That Aren’t Human (Part One) places us in a familiar position, one where we struggle to deal with the things around us, unable to completely understand how technology works but simultaneously unable to truly understand the beauty of nature. We remain confused but still standing - between the things that we have made and the things that we have not, what could be called the invented world and the natural world. We struggle to understand the natural world without ourselves in it. So we turn away to the security of the invented world, the one that we have created. As much as enduring a wilderness, the most minor of domestic tasks can become a difficult exercise in personal maintenance and survival."

Obama!

After watching the inauguration at a friends office this morning, I took the bus over to the Tenderloin. I caught this Obama pasting on an electrical box, while walking from the bus to the gallery.

The fellow walking behind me noticed me taking the photo and pointed out this "Adios" Bush pasting on the Chronicle dispenser. What a great duo and start to the day!

Mars-1

Mars-1 gew on me. I originally saw his paintings as very psychedelic, an overload of colors, and no way to relate to them. But I've since discovered a greater complexity and beauty to them.

When I look at them today, I see little worlds that are part machine and part organic. These worlds have their own ecosystems within that are sometimes revealed by the painter and look beautiful!

I still get a psychedelic feel when I look them but enjoy it this time.

You can view his Flickr page here.

He has an upcoming exhibit at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York, February 21 - March 21, 2009.

Brian Wasson at Ping Pong Gallery Tonite

In Wasson's current exhibition with the gallery, Last Wash, it seems that his "finding pleasure in the irony of life no longer works. The irony has warped from absurdity into meaninglessness, the pleasure, only solace..."

Andrea Michaelsson

Found Andrea's works on Flickr. Love the rich colors, street influence, and female subjects. Check out more here.

Clare Rojas

In Clare Rojas' works, women, men, nature and animals are strong and weak caring and connected to one another in their struggle to find harmony and balance. She celebrates women for their traditional and most basic differences and strengths. While the characters are often imbued with feelings of loss and nostalgia, one gets the sense that they will not back down. They will ultimately beat their predators at their own game.

In 2003 Clare Rojas had a group exhibition with the Luggage Store in San Francisco and won a Louis Comfort Tiffany award. In 2004 Rojas had a solo show at the San Francisco Art Institute and at the Belkin Satellite Gallery in Vancouver. Her work was included in the travelling exhibition, Beautiful Losers that recently visited the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco where she lives and works. (from Deitch Projects)

She's represented by Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco.

Deth P. Sun at Rowan Morrison

This Too Shall Pass: new work by Deth P. Sun

Pete over at Rowan Morrison just sent me the skinny of Deth's show opening tomorrow night. I'll be having a grand ol time at The Shooting Gallery for Van Arno's opening but if you're sticking to the east bay you should swing by Rowan Morrison for this stunner.

The show features 200 new paintings from Oakland artist Deth P. Sun. We just installed the show today and it looks amazing. Over 150 small, affordable paintings as mounted into a giant grid, with intersecting characters, themes, narratives, and mythic symbols. Lots of other works that depict the continuing epic journey of Deth’s world of cats, turtles, wolves, ghosts, mountains, oceans, and tasty treats.
Deth will also have some of his awesome products for sale at the show, such as his new beer cozy, some screenprints, and a brand new zine to go with the exhibition.
The show opens Saturday, January 10th, with an artist’s reception from 7-10pm. There will be beer.
The exhibition runs until February 14th (Wed – Sat : 11-6)
